our vision

Welcome to LateMode! We are an interdisciplinary hub on a mission to help you cultivate sustainable practices so you can make a positive impact on yourself, your community, and the environment.

Here are our guiding principles:

Sustainable is a weighted word. We immediately jump to environmental or ecological considerations, which although important, are just the tip of the iceberg. To be sustainable implies long-term thinking. We go slow to go far. It is a closed loop. We care for the things that take care of us. To sustain something is to be able to continue it over a long period which requires many elements to be in balance. At LateMode, we view our sustainability compass through the following three lenses:

Individual

Whether it is your financial security, psychological, physical or spiritual health, we know how much creators are willing to sacrifice for their practice. Most of the time, we just hope for the best, but by having an open and frank discussion about this, we can learn from each other, stimulating a broader conversation that empowers more creators to sustain their practices.

Community

The thread of the social fabric that all of us rely on is community. This can be your relationships with your family and friends, your neighbours, the wider network of creators, or even the people who grow your food, at the end of the day, all of us are interconnected. Creative practices have the capacity to bring people together, but also tear them apart. To be sustainable, we need each other so it is important to ask ourselves if our practice helps build meaningful connections that support our wider network.

Environment

One does not have to stretch their imagination far to understand why this is a vital element of sustainability, however, we often think of the environment as some far off place away from the horrors of the city. Of course it is important to consider the materials you use and the waste you produce, but we believe that simply by engaging with the immediate environment, you can start to nurture this greater connection. In a broader conception, environment can be as simple as the street you walk down on your way to work, or even your bedroom. How is the health of your environment? Through your practice, can you make it a little better?

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY PRACTICE?

A PRACTICE gives us the tools to explore what brings us meaning in the world and to share that with others. It has the capacity to transform our lives, the lives of our community and raise important questions on society and the environment.

Practice holds many meanings, but it’s called practice for a reason. To sustain a creative practice means you must put in the time to nurture it, and in return, it will nurture you.

TO PRACTICE requires a leap of faith. Under the pressure of “productivity”, there are a million reasons why you shouldn’t put in the hours to practice, however, by facing that challenge and doing it anyway, we teach ourselves to become more resilient.
